I am interested in how ordinary objects can become valuable, just by knowing their history. I appreciate how history can affect an object and its perceived value. Through history, an object can become a keepsake, remembrance, lineage, or heirloom just by the memories a person has associated with it. My current body of work reflects how the items handed down to me, mainly tools, have become these objects of emotional value.
The emotional ties to ordinary objects and how individuals cherish them intrigues and interests me. Our five senses add to our memory, transforming the mind to moments of the past, if only for a second. The emotional connection creates heirlooms of perceived value and renders them priceless. Because of this, we rarely use them as they were intended. Often times, they are stored, forgotten, and never used again. The valuable information that made them heirlooms becomes lost. As a result, the object becomes less desirable and its history is lost to the family. In my work, I convey the stories behind these objects so they are not lost to the next generation.
